cars I Have known: B694 NAY SAAB 900i 2 .0 Auto

A word of advice people - late night boozing, eBay, and buy it now are not to be recommended. I’d always wanted a 900 since watching the BBC series ‘The Paradise Club’ when I was in my early teens. After the Vauxhall Chavalier, I fancied something more interesting. However, this car (called Benny) was the wrong car.

It was a Combi-Coupe 5 door hatch, B reg, in white, with steel wheels and Automatic transmission, whist I wanted a post ‘88 facelift 900 full pressure turbo 16se coupe with Carlsson kit, manual, sports suspension, in black with 3 spoke alloys.

Benny was a hoot to drive though. I loved the lazy autobox, the upright driving position, comfortable interior and suspension - it really made me smile. You could fit a king sized double bed in the back too, if you put the seats down, or a couple of Ponies. The Combi-Coupe SAABs have a serious amount of load capacity.

Unfortunately, it was as rotten as hell underneath. The good outer bodywork hid a whole world of rot and despite the vendors blurb on ebay - ‘Simply polish and win shows, excellent condition etc, etc,’ was obviously in the last stages of life.It comprehensively failed the MOT three and a half weeks later but I learnt a valuable lesson - never buy a car with less than 1 months MOT especially sight unseen off the internet.

It needed about £500 worth of welding - welding I couldn’t do with money I did not have for the car that wasn't quite the one that I wanted. No thanks - back on Ebay with it. I got £125 in the end, not bad considering I’d paid £200 for it in the first place. If I’d got taxis everywhere for those 3 and a half weeks, it would have cost me more than £75, so I figured I hadn’t really lost out...

The bloke I sold it too was a boat builder and bought it because he wanted a strong vehicle with a tow bar to tow boats around the yard. Perhaps it survives to this day down in Milton Keynes marina? Who knows.
